The Head of Service Bayelsa State has been directed to issue a circular mandating all political appointees to participate in the monthly jogging exercise being organized by the State Government.

Governor Seriake Dickson also urged heads of ministries, departments and agencies in the State to use sports as a tool to re-orientate and mobilize the people for healthy living and peaceful co-existence.

Hon. Dickson, who gave the directive shortly after participating in the 14th edition of the monthly jogging exercise, in Yenagoa, also urged Permanent Secretaries, other top government functionaries and the public to take advantage of the exercise to promote their physical wellbeing.

He restated his administration’s commitment to sports development, noting that the Sports Academy at Asoama, which has reached an advanced stage of completion would commence training of youth in various sporting activities from next year.

According to Governor Dickson, “we are using sports as a means of mobilizing and re-orientating our people particularly the youths. So I want to enjoin the Head of Service and heads of departments and agencies in our government in this state to sensitize their people more. Next month, I would like to see more senior people participate in the monthly jogging event.

“I can see that most of my appointees are here but I think it will be mandatory for all appointees to take part in the monthly jogging exercise. So, I enjoin the Head of Service to issue a circular reminding the top echelon of our public service on this exercise. We are using this as a way by which we show personal example of our commitment to regular exercise and healthy lifestyle.”

Earlier in his remarks, the commissioner for Sports Development, Chief Mitema Obodor, enumerated some of the achievements of the ministry which include on-going renovation of facilities at the Samson Siasia Stadium such as provision of flood lights, swimming pool and 80-room hostel.

He said the three senatorial stadia being constructed by the present administration has reached advance stage of completion and would be commissioned by December this year to promote grassroots sports development.

According to the commissioner, the Bayelsa United Football club, which was almost at the point of relegation at the inception of the administration, has become a force to be reckoned with due to the massive support it is getting from the State Government and it is topping the table in the Nigerian Professional League (NPL).

While, commending the Governor for his interest in sports, Chief Obordor requested the State Government to provide tartan tracks, artificial turf and employment of athletes that made the State proud at the last national sports festival.
