The Governor of Bayelsa State, Hon. Seriake Dickson has urged Nigerian youths to be patriotic in their disposition, adding that the future of the country lies squarely in their hands.

He further advised youths to take advantage of the numerous opportunities available to them as well as the attendant challenges, saying that without challenges, there can be no opportunities.

The governor spoke through his deputy, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha JohnJonah(rtd), during the South-South Centenary Quiz Competition, as part of activities marking the Centenary Celebrations of Nigeria at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Yenagoa.

He also said that Nigerians should be proud of their country and exploit the abundant resources available in the country maximally, stressing that Nigeria is the biggest economy in the West African sub-region, with Lagos, coming second.

He, therefore, stated that Nigeria as a country has achieved so much within its 100 years of existence and pleaded with those calling for the break-up of the country to do a rethink.

In his speech, the Permanent Secretary, General Services, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, MrLinusAwute, who represented the SGF, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, said that the Centenary Quiz Competition was packaged to broaden the knowledge of the Nigerian youth on Nigeria, especially the need for the unity of the country.

According to him, as leaders of tomorrow, Nigerian youths must imbibe the vital attributes of discipline, hard-work and properly educate themselves so as to effectively assume the leadership of the country in the future.

Also speaking, the Co-ordinator of the Quiz Competition, Angelo Onuko, stated that the essence of the competition was to educate the Nigerian youth on the importance of her history, cultural heritage, patriotism, unity as well as encouraging them to be actively involved in governance and community development.

She also stated that 30 contestants were chosen for the Quiz Competition, out of which, three winnerswill emerge, with the first position, attracting a sum of N250,000=00 while the second and third winners, will go home with N150,000=00 and N100,000=00 respectively, thereafter, the overall winner will compete with other zonal winners in Abuja in the grand finale, which the winner will receive one million naira and be named as the Centenary Youth Genius.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Commissioner of Education, Chief SaloAdikumo, advised youths to be of good character as the future of Nigeria was in their hands.
